Friendly little guy!
This vermilion flycatcher is quite a photogenic bird! It lives at Lost Lake here on Tacubaya Ranch and likes to greet everyone that stops by!

Today we planted some south Texas native plants around our pavilion to offer our resident butterflies and caterpillars a new dining area. The new additions include white plumbago, croton, blue mistflowers (crucita), barbados cherries and adelias. A few lantana even migrated to the area! Butterflies…… Come and get it!
Jeff Parker captured this image of a Forbes’ Silkmoth (Rothschildia lebeau forbesi) yesterday while visiting Tacubaya Ranch! To date the only U.S. records of this moth have been from Cameron and Hidalgo Counties. This moth feeds on the plants of many different species in the tropics and traditionally ranges from South America north through Central America and Mexico to the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Now it looks like we have them in Brooks County!! I’m sure this moth will be high on the “Want List” for all the photographers taking our November Workshop with Jeff!

Our December workshop, “Close Encounters with Ruth Hoyt”, has been set for December 10-12, 2010 and will focus on macro photography. Ruth is a Master Naturalist and full-time photographer who has been teaching photography since 1990. She has had her work displayed in the Smithsonian Institute, Missouri Botanical Garden, Powder Valley Nature Center, Shaw Nature Reserve and St. Louis Artists’ Guild, and is on permanent display in two locations in Alton, Illinois, one in McAllen, Texas, and another in Rio Grande City, Texas. Ruth has also had the honor of having her work published in National Geographic Books, The Nature Conservancy, Birder’s World, The Valley Land Fund (Texas), Coastal Bend Focus on Wildlife (Texas), Missouri Wildlife, Missouri Magazine, AAA’s Home and Away, Michigan Living, Texas Monthly, Rio Grande Valley Nature, North American Birding Association’s Birding, Vision Magazine and more. For information on the workshop visit our “Workshops” page. Here is a brief example of Ruth’s images.
This morning we went out to shoot (with a camera, not a gun) a few of the larger critters we have here at Tacubaya Ranch. Hope you enjoy the images.
